Integrated Six Sigma Tools, Open Architecture, and More Make STATISTICA Enterprise/QC Unique in Industry
(Tulsa, Okla.) StatSoft, Inc. is pleased to announce that Version 6 of its powerful enterprise-wide quality control and improvement application, STATISTICA Enterprise/QC , is now available. STATISTICA Enterprise/QC Version 6 includes a number of enhancements and additional functionality that make it truly unique in the industry, including: comprehensive Six Sigma tools and a “Six Sigma-oriented” user interface, integrated Visual Basic scripting for easy automation/customization, a new Query Wizard for seamless data acquisition, complete Web enablement options, and much more.
In addition to these new enhancements, STATISTICA Enterprise/QC 6 includes features that have garnered STATISTICA the highest rating in EVERY comparative review of statistics software in which it has been featured since its first release in 1993. Users and reviewers have consistently applauded the leading edge, fully integrated graphics technologies (in one review STATISTICA called “the King of Data Visualization software”) and stunning reports that can be published automatically (even on the Web).
The latest version of STATISTICA Enterprise/QC, as well as STATISTICA single-user Industrial Solutions, is specifically designed for Six Sigma initiatives and is unique among QC related applications that are currently on the market in terms of the comprehensiveness of Six Sigma tools available and the “Six Sigma-orientation” of the user interface. Options for collaborative work and facilities for management of user or group permissions further enhance any organization’s Six Sigma or quality improvement initiative.
The unique open architecture of STATISTICA Enterprise/QC and all STATISTICA products offers a number of distinct advantages. Users can easily customize and automate tasks using STATISTICA Visual Basic. For example, with a click of the mouse, every action can be recorded in the background in standard Visual Basic and be assigned to a toolbar and reused. In addition, every aspect of the interface can be adjusted by dragging controls with the mouse so that countless program options can be as hidden or as exposed as desired.
The Query Wizard in STATISTICA Enterprise/QC 6 allows users to easily access data from a wide variety of databases such as Oracle, MS SQL Server, Sybase, etc. The STATISTICA Enterprise/QC Query Wizard automatically builds SQL statements as the user selects the components of the query via a simple graphical interface so extensive knowledge of SQL is not necessary in order for users to create advanced and powerful queries of data in a quick and straightforward manner.
STATISTICA Enterprise/QC 6 also offers two options for Web enablement for users to share documents across the hall or across continents. The first option, Entry Level WebSTATISTICA, is a powerful report generation tool for creating highly customized reports, formatted the way that you want, and at times that you choose. The ultimate Web-enablement option, WebSTATISTICA Complete, offers a complete Internet-browser based user interface and enables users to easily access data and powerful analytical tools of STATISTICA Enterprise/QC and STATISTICA from virtually any computer in the world as long as it is connected to the Web. With WebSTATISTICA Complete all quality control processes can be managed remotely over the Internet.

A case study in the April 2002 issue of Quality magazine describes how Steelcase, a leading office furniture manufacturer, recently achieved unprecedented quality gains using StatSoft's popular enterprise-wide SPC software, STATISTICA Enterprise/QC. According to Steelcase, the decision to purchase STATISTICA Enterprise/QC was part of an enterprise-wide initiative to standardize statistical software as a process improvement tool.
One of Steelcase's objectives in this initiative was to lower the average millage (paint thickness) needed to meet customer requirements, and reduce the variation in the application of paint. A project team used STATISTICA Enterprise/QC to evaluate the state of three existing paint lines, two powder coat operations and a liquid line at the Office Systems plant. When the data from film thickness gages showed significant variation in paint millage, various STATISTICA Enterprise/QC tools were used to identify the sources of the variation and help develop process improvements.
The project was deemed "a tremendous success," said Paul Dzwonek, quality engineer for Steelcase's Office Systems plant in Grand Rapids. Average paint millage on one powder coat line was reduced by 15%, and the variation was reduced dramatically by 40%. In just one year, material savings amounted to more than 3 times the total investment in all of the STATISTICA Enterprise/QC software, training, and implementation services purchased.
According to Steelcase, four out of fifteen Steelcase North American plants use STATISTICA Enterprise/QC and expanded use is planned.

In a recent article in the Bulletin of the Ecological Society of America (January 2002 issue) reviewers call STATISTICA Neural Networks (SNN) an "excellent package for both new and experienced users of neural networks" and "by far the best, in terms of ease of use, power."
Reviewers Jeffrey Lusk, Oklahoma State University Department of Forestry, and Steven Wilson, of EcoLogic Research, compare STATISTICA Neural Networks with Neural Connections from SPSS and Qnet 2000 from Vesta Services. They agree that "SNN's interface is more intuitive than other packages and allows users to view simultaneously data, network predictions/output, and performance statistics." They conclude that STATISTICA is "the most intuitive and easiest to use of the three packages."
They found the genetic algorithms utility unique to STATISTICA. "SNN can test various combinations of variables against each other to evolve an optimal set for subsequent neural network development. The genetic algorithm also ranks variables in the optimal subset, indicating which variables are most important. This feature is useful for removing noisy, information-poor variables from large data sets prior to further analysis. Neither of the other two neural network packages mentioned above has this capability."
They also praise the simulation tool in SNN as being "much more intuitive and easy to use than a similar tool in SPSS's Neural Connections," while "Qnet 2000 does not provide a simulation tool at all." They go on to say that "SNN will generate classification networks if it detects a categorical dependent variable in the training data set. No additional input is required from the user, and model building is again very fast and efficient....Diagnostic output is very complete, and includes a sensitivity analysis to help determine the importance of different input variable to the final model."
