II. New Reviews
STATISTICA has received the highest rating in every comparative review in
which it was featured since its first release in 1993. Here are just a few recent reviews. For a complete listing of reviews, please visit our web site at Reviews
**STATISTICA Receives Scientific Computing and Instrumentation's 1999
Reader's Choice Award for Statistical Software**
For the third consecutive year, STATISTICA has received the Reader's Choice Award for statistical software from the readers of Scientific Computing and Instrumentation. This is an especially great honor based solely upon the votes of a large number of scientists and data analysts voting on quality, reliability, ease-of-use, technical support, and value to price. Scientific Computing and Instrumentation (formerly known as Scientific Computing and Automation) is a leading scientific journal that focuses on the latest computer, software and instrument technologies available for scientists and technical professionals.
**STATISTICA "known for its clean interface and impressive graphics output" offers "high-end stats in a friendly package" according to NASA Tech Briefs Review**
STATISTICA has received another complimentary review in the July 1999 issue of NASA Tech Briefs, a leading engineering and design magazine with a circulation of more than 200,000. The reviewer notes, "STATISTICA has long been known for its clean interface and its impressive graphics output" and agreed with this analysis after using the program. He quoted, "Even simple tasks are easier with STATISTICA," but he also gives STATISTICA accolades for its ease of use in areas less familiar to the user: "Searching STATISTICA for tests I rarely or never use let me check my methods with ease…The sophistication of high-end stats packages does count!" In conclusion he calls STATISTICA "a new friend" for analyzing data.
**STATISTICA Neural Networks "provides the user with great freedom to
select data mining methods" (Scientific Computing World, June/July 1999)**
STATISTICA Neural Networks was recently put to the test analyzing pooled
and variously structured geographical data obtained from diverse sources in
a review in the leading European scientific journal, Scientific Computing
World. The review describes STATISTICA and STATISTICA Neural Networks as a
"middle-ground combination" of "conservative systems that employ flexible
programmable statistics languages" and "revolutionary products that favor
the rapid evolutionary cycles of artificial intelligence." The reviewer
compliments "the great freedom to select data mining methods" offered by
the program. He concludes that "the software performed well and all
involved were enthusiastic and satisfied with the return on their
investment of time and data."

V. FAQ and TECH TIPS
The FAQ section on our web site is a simple way to find answers to
questions about STATISTICA at your leisure. Search the user-friendly
question-and-answer format using key words to obtain summary information on the most commonly used conventions, features, and facilities in STATISTICA. Go to http://www.statsoft.com/faq.html to get your questions answered.
In the meantime, here are just a few helpful tips:
**Displaying Date on X-axis**
QUESTION: How can I display the date on the x-axis of X-bar R-chart graph?
ANSWER: Go to the Interactive QC module. Select Option on Charts Tab.
Select Labeling Tab. Under Labeling Samples on X-axis, select Use Values
in Variable button to select variable to be displayed on X-axis.
**Highlighting Individual Plots**
QUESTION: I am creating 16 Box & Whisker plots on one graph - but I would
like to highlight an individual plot. How can I do this?
ANSWER: Right-click on graph, select Edit Graph Data. Right-click on
specific plot (case) to be highlighted to select Mark data option.
Right-click on case to chose Select Data (All) and then Move to New Plot
option. Right-click on data to access Select Data (All) and then De-select
option. Go to menu bar at top of screen and select Exit & Redraw button.
Specified plot now can be edited/highlighted.
**C-charts**
QUESTION: I would like three lines on his c-chart in regards to 1 *sigma,
2* sigma, 3* sigma. The graph, by default, gives me the 3*sigma but how do
I get the other 2 lines on the same chart?
ANSWER: First, use the warn.line button in order to put another line on
the graph. In order to get a third set of lines (and fourth set, etc.), go
to the Layout/General Layout option for the chart and use the Control Lines
option. In doing this, you'll need to know the exact line you want drawn
(i.e., y=74.5) in order to enter the appropriate line.
**Quantile Plots**
QUESTION: How do you display multiple quantile plots as one plot? And,
why do the quantile lines disappear when I reduce the range of the y-axis?
ANSWER: To display multiple quantile plots as one plot, use case selection
to define data for each plot, color-code data for each plot, and then merge
plots. The quantile lines are part of an overlaid plot. When you change
the y-axis min/max, you must edit the range of the line plot data to match
the range of the data plot (y-axis). The lines disappear when the range of
the y-axis is reduced because the overlay can not define the end-points,
which reside outside the range of the defined y-axis. To edit the line
data, use Layout/Edit Data menu options to access the Line plot data.
Change the y-axis data pairs to match the user-defined min/max y-axis data.
Then select the Edit & Redraw option to display these changes.
Technically, the quantile lines are not considered grid lines because they
are not necessarily proportional; the user can define any quantile value to
be displayed as a line on the plot.
